Free Agency Recap Thus Far

Top Mover:

The Patriots are by far the biggest mover this free agency period. So far the Pats have signed:

Jonnu Smith 4/$50M

Hunter Henry 3/$37.5M

Nelson Agholor 2/$26M

Jalen Mills 4/$24M

Matt Judon 4/$56M

Davon Godchaux 2/$16M

Trent Brown

Joe Thuney- Kansas City Chiefs

Marcus Cannon- Houston Texans

This type of activity is far from the Patriot way we have been used to over the years.

As you can see the teams who have gone on spending sprees like this haven't exactly been successful. As the saying goes, championships are won through the draft. These moves reek of desperation to me. The team had a ton of cap space and Belichick was licking his wounds after last seasons disaster. He knows last season can't happen again for the sake of his legacy after what Tom did. He's throwing money at whoever will take it and praying something sticks. Jonnu Smith in my opinion is a gross overpayment. He benefitted from having Derrick Henry and AJ Brown around him. No way he will produce as a top option with defenses focusing on him now. Hunter Henry can't stay healthy so that deal could go south quickly. Jalen Mills is garbage and Agholor had one good year under Gruden after multiple terrible years in which he was viewed as a bust. The departures on the O-line are going to hurt and Cam is still the QB. Judon and Godchaux on the other hand are solid pickups that should fit nicely into that defense.

Top Losers:

The Steelers are getting shelled right now. With minimal cap space I knew we wouldn't make any noteworthy signings, but I didn't expect this mass exodus. As of now we have the most cap space going into 2022, so we could give out back-end heavy deals if we wanted. Instead of utilizing this, we signed GM Kevin Colbert to a 1yr extension and called it a day.

Bud Dupree- Tennessee Titans

Mike Hilton- Cincinatti Bengals

Tyson Alualu- Jacksonville Jaguars

Matt Feiler- LA Chargers

Juju Smith-Schuster- unsigned but not coming back

Alejandro Villanueva- unsigned, likely not coming back

Maurkice Pouncy- retired

For an organization that claims to be in the last year of their SB window with Big Ben, they are doing nothing to build around him. Perhaps letting these guys walk will be for the best. Start the rebuild now and keep as much cap flexibilty moving forward as possible. I would have loved to see Dupree back though. He and TJ were a power duo coming off the edges. However, it remains to be seen if he will return to form coming off the ACL tear.

The Jets came into this period with the 2nd most cap space and were looking to do damage. So far all they have to show for it is Corey Davis and Jarrad Davis. Rumors are players don't want to go to the Jets because they are unsure about the Sam Darnold situation. It appears a new coaching staff wasn't enough to convince players to come to NY.

I'm adding the Bengals to this list because their top priority this offseason is, or should be getting help for Joe Burrow. Thus far they have failed to do so. They missed out on some of the top O-linemen and haven't added any weapons. The team may be more focused on adding through the draft, so we'll see what happens.

Yes the Ravens added Zeitler, but the rest of free agency has not gone as smoothly. Mark Ingram, Matt Judon, and Yannick Ngakoue all walked. So far they have failed to add more weapons around Lamar. I guess what does it matter he's just going to choke in the playoffs anyway.
