Masters Weekend Preview

The first two days of the 2021 Masters are in the books. The course is playing tough right now and the greens are very firm. If we make it through this weekend without any rain, then the greens will have zero hold. With high winds in the forecast today there's going to be a lot of focus on short games. This should play well into the hands of guys like Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas who have excellent short games. They both however have a bit of work to do this weekend as this is where we see the leaderboards entering today.

Justin Rose found himself at the top of the leaderboard after both Thursday and Friday. He shot a great -7 on Thursday, but only shot E on Friday. He needs to return to some semblance of his Thursday form if he hopes to hold off those behind him and earn that coveted green jacket. The surprise of the weekend thus far can be found just behind Justin in Will Zalatoris who is currently sitting at -6. I am a pretty avid golf fan, but I had never heard of Zalatoris prior to this weekend. What an underdog story a win by Z would be, but I believe he is going to drop off a bit today. Tied with him is Brian Harman. Consistency is key in the Masters and in the game of golf in general. If I had to bet I would say Brian shoots another 69 today, which would keep him right in the hunt, if not give him the outright lead today. As for everyone else they have quite the challenge ahead of them, but i believe everyone from Bryson on up still have a chance at the green jacket. That will obviously change after today, so we will see what happens. As I mentioned the weather could be a factor this weekend.

It is looking to be wet and windy today, but after early thunderstorms tomorrow morning we should have a nice weather finish on Sunday evening.

I'm sure you all know there was no way I would be able to avoid placing some wagers on this Masters weekend. I rarely put money on golf just because theres so many things that can happen in a tournament. This weekend is different though, it's the Masters how can you not lose some money. I avoided placing any bets on Thursday or Friday. You can typically get about the same odds on golfers at the start of Saturday and you have a much better idea of who has a legitimate shot at a win. This Saturday I took Jordan Spieth (+450) and Justin Thomas (+500) with a small wager on Cameron Champ just because his +3300 odds were too good to pass up. Like I said above with the weather conditions expected today, hitting the greens is going to be crucial in keeping your score low. As you can see below Jordan and Justin are both doing it at extremely high rates.

Jordan's 83% is the best in the field this weekend and Justin's 77.78% is third best. Jordan is one of the best putters in the game to add to that and he is hot coming off his first win in years last weekend at the Valero. Champ's green numbers aren't great, but in spite of them he is still -4. If he can hit the greens at a higher percentage, then he could easily find himself in contention for the lead after today. Agree or disagree I am betting on one of these three to be put the green jacket on on Sunday.

We've had some big surprises already this Masters. Last fall's Masters champion Dustin Johnson missed the cut at +5. The cutline was +3. Other notable names to miss the cut are Sergio Garcia, Brooks Koepka, Lee Westwood, Rory Mcilroy, Jason Day, and Mathew Wolff who was DQ'd after getting caught lying about his score on 17 yesterday. He wasn't making the cut regardless. Rory had an abismal day on Thursday and couldn't recover enough on Friday finishing at +6. The green jacket continues to be as elusive as ever to him. The others just struggled both Thursday and Friday and were never quite in contention to make the cut. Bryson kicks off the action among the leaders today at 1pm and I'm looking forward to hopefully winning some money in a great weekend at Augusta.
